Pouring Poison and Planting Seeds of Dependency

By Colin Todhunter

Do you remember the iconic Union Carbide image from the 1950s or early 1960s? The one with the giant hand coming from the sky, pouring pesticides onto Indian soil.

The blurb below the image includes the following:

Science helps build a new India тАУ India has developed bold new plans to build its economy and bring the promise of a bright future to its more than 400 million people. But India needs the technical knowledge of the western world. For example working with Indian engineers and technicians, Union Carbide recently made available its fast scientific resource to help build a chemicals and plastics plant near Bombay. Throughout the free world, Union Carbide has been actively engaged in building plants for the manufacture of chemicals, plastics, carbons, gases and metals.тАЭ

In the bottom corner is the Union Carbide logo and the statement тАШA HAND IN THINGS TO COMEтАЩ.

This тАШhand of godтАЩ image has become infamous. Union CarbideтАЩs тАШhand in things to comeтАЩ includes the gas leak at its pesticides plant in Bhopal in 1984. It resulted in around 560,000 injured (respiratory problems, eye irritation, etc), 4,000 severely disabled and 20,000 dead.

As for the chemical-intensive agriculture it promoted, we can now see the impacts: degraded soils, polluted water, illness, farmer debt and suicides (by drinking pesticides!), nutrient-dense crops/varieties being side-lined, a narrower range of crops, no increase in food production per capita (in India at least), the corporate commodification of knowledge and seeds, the erosion of farmersтАЩ environmental learning, the undermining of traditional knowledge systems and farmersтАЩ dependency on corporations.

Whether it involves the type of ecological devastation activist-farmer Bhaskar Save outlined for policy makers in his 2006 open letter or the social upheaval documented by Vandana Shiva in the book The Violence of the Green Revolution, the consequences have been far-reaching.

And yet тАУ whether it involves new genetic engineering techniques or more pesticides тАУ  there is a relentless drive by the agritech conglomerates to further entrench their model of agriculture by destroying traditional farming practices with the aim of placing more farmers on corporate seed and chemical treadmills.

These corporations have been pushing for the European Commission to remove any labelling and safety checks for new genomic techniques. The European Court of Justice ruled in 2018 that organisms obtained with new genetic modification techniques must be regulated under the EUтАЩs existing GMO laws. However, there has been intense lobbying from the agriculture biotech industry to weaken the legislation, aided financially by the Gates Foundation.

Since 2018, top agribusiness and biotech corporations have spent almost тВм37 million lobbying the European Union. They have had 182 meetings with European Commissioners, their cabinets and director generals. More than one meeting a week.

In recent weeks, Syngenta (a subsidiary of ChemChina) CEO Erik Fyrwald has come to the fore to cynically lobby for these techniques.

But before discussing Fyrwald, let us turn to another key agribusiness figure who has been in the news. Former Monsanto chairman and CEO Hugh Grant recently appeared in court to be questioned by lawyers on behalf of a cancer patient in the case of Allan Shelton v Monsanto.

Shelton has non-Hodgkin lymphoma and is one of the 100,000-plus people in the US claiming in lawsuits that exposure to MonsantoтАЩs Roundup weedkiller and its other brands containing the chemical glyphosate caused their cancer.

His lawyers argued that Grant was an active participant and decision-maker in the companyтАЩs Roundup business and should be made to testify at the trial.

Why not? After all, he did make a financial killing from peddling poison.

Bayer acquired Monsanto in 2018 and Grant received an estimated $77 million post-sale payoff. Bloomberg reported in 2017 that Monsanto had increased GrantтАЩs salary to $19.5 million.

By 2009, Roundup-related products, which include genetically modified seeds developed to withstand glyphosate-based applications, represented about half of MonsantoтАЩs gross margin.

Roundup was integral to MonsantoтАЩs business model and GrantтАЩs enormous income and final payoff.

Consider the following quote from a piece that appeared on the Bloomberg website in 2014:

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Hugh Grant is focused on selling more genetically modified seeds in Latin America to drive earnings growth outside the core US market. Sales of soybean seeds and genetic licenses climbed 16%, and revenue in the unit that makes glyphosate weed killer, sold as Roundup, rose 24%.тАЭ

In the same piece, Chris Shaw, a New York-based analyst at Monness Crespi Hardt & Co, is reported as saying тАЬGlyphosate really crushed itтАЭ тАУ meaning the sales of glyphosate were a major boost.

All fine for Grant and Monsanto. But this has had devastating effects on human health. тАШThe Human Cost of Agrotoxins. How Glyphosate is killing ArgentinaтАЩ, which appeared on the Lifegate website in November 2015, serves as a damning indictment of the drive for тАЬearnings growthтАЭ by Monsanto. Moreover, in the same year, some 30,000 doctors in that country demanded a ban on glyphosate.

The bottom line for Grant was sales and profit maximisation and the unflinching defence of glyphosate, no matter how carcinogenic to humans it is and, more to the point, how much Monsanto knew it was.

Noam Chomsky underlines the commercial imperative:

тАж the CEO of a corporation has actually a legal obligation to maximize profit and market share. Beyond that legal obligation, if the CEO doesnтАЩt do it, and, letтАЩs say, decides to do something that will, say, benefit the population and not increase profit, he or she is not going to be CEO much longer тАУ  theyтАЩll be replaced by somebody who does do it.тАЭ

SyngentaтАЩs CEO is cut from the same cloth as Grant. While MonsantoтАЩs crimes are well documented, SyngentaтАЩs transgressions are less well publicised.

In 2006, writer and campaigner Dr Brian John claimed:

GM Free Cymru has discovered that Syngenta, in its promotion of GM crops and foods, has been involved in a web of lies, deceptions and obstructive corporate behaviour that would have done credit to its competitor Monsanto.тАЭ

Some weeks ago, Fyrwald called for organic farming to be abandoned. In view of the food crisis, brought on by the war in Ukraine, he claimed rich countries had to increase their crop production тАУ but organic farming led to lower yields. Fyrwald also called for gene editing to be at the heart of the food agenda in order to increase food production.

He stated:

тАЬThe indirect consequence is that people are starving in Africa because we are eating more and more organic products.тАЭ

In response, Kilian Baumann, a Bernese organic farmer and president of the Swiss Small FarmersтАЩ Association, called FyrwaldтАЩs arguments тАЬgrotesqueтАЭ. He claimed Fyrwald was тАЬfighting for salesтАЭ.

Writing on the GMWatch website, Jonathan Matthews says the Russian invasion of Ukraine seems to have emboldened FyrwaldтАЩs scaremongering.

Matthews states:

FyrwaldтАЩs comments reflect the industryтАЩs determination to undermine the European UnionтАЩs Farm to Fork strategy, which aims by 2030 not just to slash pesticide use by 50% and fertilizer use by 20% but to more than triple the percentage of EU farmland under organic management (from 8.1% to 25%), as part of the transition towards a тАШmore sustainable food systemтАЩ within the EUтАЩs Green Deal.тАЭ

He adds:

Syngenta view[s] these goals as an almost existential threat. This has led to a carefully orchestrated attack on the EU strategy.тАЭ

The details of this PR offensive have been laid out in a report by the Brussels-based lobby watchdog Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO): A loud lobby for a silent spring: The pesticide industryтАЩs toxic lobbying tactics against Farm to Fork.

Mathews quotes research that shows GM crops have no yield benefit. He also refers to a newly published report that draws together research clearly showing GM crops have driven substantial increases тАУ not decreases тАУ in pesticide use. The newer and much-hyped gene-edited crops look set to do the same.

Syngenta is among the corporations criticised by a report from the UN for тАЬsystematic denial of harmsтАЭ and тАЬunethical marketing tacticsтАЭ. Matthews notes that selling highly hazardous pesticides is actually at the core of SyngentaтАЩs business model.

According to Matthews, even with the logistical disruptions to maize and wheat crops caused by the war in Ukraine, there is still enough grain available to the world market to meet existing needs. He says the current price crisis (not food crisis) is a product of fear and speculation.

Matthews concludes:

If Erik Fyrwald is really so concerned about hunger, why isnтАЩt he attacking the boondoggle that is biofuels, rather than going after organic farming? The obvious answer is that the farmers being subsidised to grow biofuels are big consumers of agrichemicals and, in the US case, GMO seeds тАУ unlike organic farmers, who buy neither.тАЭ

Fyrwald has a financial imperative to lobby for particular strategies and technologies. He is far from an objective observer. And he is far from honest in his appraisal тАУ using fear of a food crisis to push his agenda.

Meanwhile, the sustained attacks on organic agriculture have become an industry mainstay, despite numerous high-level reports and projects indicating it could feed the world, mitigate climate change, improve farmersтАЩ situations, lead to better soil, create employment and provide healthier and more diverse diets.

There is a food crisis but not the one alluded to by Fyrwald тАУ  denutrified food and unhealthy diets that are at the centre of a major public health crisis, a loss of biodiversity which threatens food security, degraded soils, polluted and depleted water sources and smallholder farmers, so vital to global food production (especially in the Global South), squeezed off their land and out of farming.

Transnational agribusiness has lobbied for, directed and profited from policies that have caused much of the above. And what we now see is these corporations and their lobbyists espousing (fake) concern (a cynical lobbying tactic) for the plight of the poor and hungry while attempting to purchase EU democracy to the tune of тВм37 million. Cheap at the price considering the financial bonanza that its new patented genetic engineering technologies and seeds could reap.

Various scientific publications show these new techniques allow developers to make significant genetic changes, which can be very different from those that happen in nature. These new GMOs pose similar or greater risks than older-style GMOs.

By attempting to dodge regulation as well as avoid economic, social, environmental and health impact assessments, it is clear were the industryтАЩs priorities lie.

Unfortunately, Fyrwald, Bill Gates, Hugh Grant and their ilk are unwilling and too often incapable of viewing the world beyond their reductionist mindsets that merely regard seed/chemical sales, output-yield and corporate profit as the measuring stick of success.

What is required is an approach that sustains indigenous knowledge, local food security, better nutrition per acre, clean and stable water tables and good soil structure. An approach that places food sovereignty, local ownership, rural communities and rural economies at the centre of policy and which nurtures biodiversity, boosts human health and works with nature rather than destroying these.

FyrwaldтАЩs scaremongering is par for the course тАУ the world will starve without corporate chemicals and (GM) seeds, especially if organics takes hold. This type of stuff has been standard fare from the industry and its lobbyists and bought career scientists for many years.

It flies in the face of reality, not least how certain agribusiness concerns have been part of a US geopolitical strategy that undermines food security in regions across the world. These concerns have thrived on the creation of dependency and profited from conflict. Moreover, there is the success of agroecological approaches to farming that have no need for what Fyrwald is hawking.

Instead, the industry continues to promote itself as the saviour of humanity тАУ a hand of god powered by a brave new techno-utopian world of corporate science, pouring poison and planting seeds of corporate dependency with the missionary zeal of Western saviourism.

Monkeypox┬аFears┬аMay Rescue┬аEndangered┬аCorporations

Two corrupt companies were in rocky financial territory just a few weeks ago. Now, with concerns over a global monkeypox outbreak being hyped by media and global health organizations alike, the worries тАУ and sins тАУ of these two firms are quickly being forgotten.

In recent days, concern over a global outbreak of monkeypox, a mild disease related to smallpox and chickenpox, has been hyped in the media and health ministries around the world, even prompting an emergency meeting at the World Health Organization (WHO). For some, fears have centered around monkeypox being the potential тАЬnext pandemicтАЭ after Covid-19. For others, the fear is that monkeypox will be used as the latest excuse to further advance draconian biosecurity policies and global power grabs.

Regardless of how the monkeypox situation plays out, two companies are already cashing in. As concern over monkeypox has risen, so too have the shares of Emergent Biosolutions and SIGA Technologies. Both companies essentially have monopolies in the US market, and other markets as well, on smallpox vaccines and treatments. Their main smallpox-focused products are, conveniently, also used to protect against or treat monkeypox as well. As a result, the shares of Emergent Biosolutions climbed 12% on Thursday, while those of SIGA soared 17.1%.

For these companies, the monkeypox fears are a godsend, specifically for SIGA, which produces a smallpox treatment, known by its brand name TPOXX. It is SIGAтАЩs only product. While some outlets have noted that the rise in the valuation of SIGA Technologies has coincided with recent concerns about monkeypox, essentially no attention has been given to the fact that the company is apparently the only piece of a powerful billionaireтАЩs empire that isnтАЩt currently crumbling.

That billionaire, тАЬcorporate raiderтАЭ Ron Perelman, has deep and controversial ties to the Clinton family and the Democratic party as well as troubling ties to Jeffery Epstein. Aside from his controlling stake in SIGA, Perelman has recently made headlines for rapidly liquidating many of his assets in a desperate bid for cash.

Similarly, Emergent Biosolutions has also been in hot water. The company, which has troubling ties to the 2001 Anthrax attacks, came under fire just under two weeks ago for engaging in a тАЬcover upтАЭ over quality control issues relating to their production of Covid-19 vaccines. A Congressional investigation found that quality control concerns at an Emergent-run facility led to more than 400 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines being discarded. The Emergent factory in question had been shut down by the FDA in April 2021. They were allowed to reopen last August before the government terminated the contract. Given that the majority of the companyтАЩs business is tied to US government contracts, the loss of this contract, and the accompanying poor publicity, the news that its smallpox vaccine may soon be of international interest is likely seen as a godsend by the company.

Notably, this the second time in a year that both companies have benefitted from pandemic or bioterror fears propagated by the media. Last November, speculation rose that a re-emergence of the eradicated virus that causes smallpox would soon take place. This first began with Bill GatesтАЩ comments on the prospects of smallpox bioterrorism during a November 4th, 2021 interview and was followed by the November 16th announcement of a CDC/FBI investigation into 15 suspicious vials labeled тАЬsmallpoxтАЭ at a Merck facility in Philadelphia. Now, roughly six months later, the same fears are again paying off for the same two companies.

A Killer Enterprise

Emergent Biosolution was previously known as BioPort. The company was founded by Fuad el-Hibri, a Lebanese businessman, who leveraged his contacts with powerful US former military officials and politicians, to take control of a flailing Michigan factory. It was the only factory authorized to produce an anthrax vaccine.

The anthrax vaccine was known to have major problems even before BioPort had acquired it, and is believed by many investigators to be one of the main causes of тАЬGulf WarтАЭ syndrome. The vaccine itself, originally developed at Fort Detrick, had little to no safety track record at the time it was administered to US troops in the First Gulf War тАУ a problem that was never remedied. However, its chronic safety issues and its clumsy, multi-dose regimen would later prompt BioPort/Emergent Biosolutions to spend years developing a new formulation of its anthrax vaccine.

The creation of BioPort┬аcoincided with┬аthe Clinton administrationтАЩs efforts to mandate the anthrax vaccine for all members of the US Armed Forces. With control over the only source of anthrax vaccine, BioPort was poised to make a killing.

Once the company acquired the Michigan facility, it took large amounts of US government funds, ostensibly to make improvements at the site. However, the company declined to use the funds to make the necessary repairs, instead spending that money on its executivesтАЩ offices, as opposed to the vaccine factory, and millions more on bonuses for тАЬsenior management.тАЭ Pentagon auditors would later find that still millions more had gone тАЬmissingтАЭ and BioPortтАЩs staff were unaware of the cost of producing a single dose of the vaccine. Despite the clear mismanagement and corruption, BioPort demanded to be bailed out by the Pentagon, and they were. Meanwhile, the Michigan facility lost its license after a government inspection found numerous safety issues.

However, by August 2001, BioPort stood to lose the Pentagon contracts тАУ its only source of income. The Pentagon began preparing a report, due to be released in September 2001, that would detail a plan for letting BioPort go. Thanks to the September 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon, that report was never released. Shortly thereafter, the 2001 anthrax attacks began.

Just months before, BioPort had contracted Battelle Memorial Institute to help rescue its flailing vaccine program. The deal gave Battelle тАЬimmediate exposure to the vaccineтАЭ and it was used in connection with the Pentagon-funded, gain-of-function anthrax program that involved both Ken Alibek and William C. Patrick III, two bioweapons experts with deep ties to the CIA. That program was housed at BattelleтАЩs West Jefferson facility in Ohio. That facility is believed by many investigators to be the source of the anthrax used in the 2001 attacks.

The ensuing panic from the anthrax attacks led the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to intervene. They gave BioPort its license back in January 2002 despite persisting safety concerns at its vaccine production facility in Michigan. BioPort was not content to merely see its past contracts with the Pentagon restored, however, as it began lobbying heavily for new contracts for anthrax vaccines intended for American civilians, postal workers and others. They would get them, largely thanks to HHSтАЩ then-counter-terrorism adviser and soon to be HHSтАЩ newest Assistant Secretary тАФ Jerome Hauer. Hauer would later join the board of BioPort, after it reformed as Emergent Biosolutions, in 2004.

Such examples of cronyism are more common than not when it comes to Emergent Biosolutions. Indeed, the company has frequently relied on individuals who spend their careers passing through the тАЬrevolving doorтАЭ between the pharmaceutical industry and government, particularly those who also moonlight as bioterror alarmists.┬аOne of the main individuals critical to the companyтАЩs success over the years has been Robert Kadlec. Kadlec served as┬аthe top bioterror advisor┬аto the Pentagon in the weeks leading up to the 2001 anthrax attacks. Months prior, he had participated in the June 2001 simulation Dark Winter, which тАЬpredictedтАЭ major aspects of the subsequent anthrax attacks. Kadlec subsequently crafted much of the legislation that would create the countryтАЩs subsequent bioterror/pandemic response policy, including BARDA and the Strategic National Stockpile.

Soon after leaving government, Robert Kadlec helped found a new company in 2012 called тАЬEast West Protection,тАЭ which develops and delivers тАЬintegrated all-hazards preparedness and response systems for communities and sovereign nations.тАЭ The company also тАЬadvises communities and countries on issues related to the threat of weapons of mass destruction and natural pandemics.тАЭ

Kadlec formed the company with W. Craig Vanderwagen, the first HHS Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (a position Kadlec had helped write into law and would later hold himself). The other co-founder of East West Protection was Fuad El-Hibri, the founder of BioPort/Emergent Biosolutions, who had just stepped down as EmergentтАЩs CEO earlier that year.

Kadlec then became a consultant. KadlecтАЩs consultancy firm, RPK Consulting, netted him $451,000 in 2014 alone, where he directly advised Emergent Biosolutions as well as other pharmaceutical companies like Bavarian Nordic. Kadlec was also a consultant to military and intelligence contractors, such as the DARPA-backed firm Invincea and NSA contractor Scitor, which was recently acquired by SAIC.

Kadlec would return to government as HHS ASPR under Trump, a position which he held at the time the Covid-19 crisis began. The year prior, in 2019, Kadlec had conducted a months-long simulation focused on a global pandemic originating in China called Crimson Contagion. Once the Covid-19 crisis began in earnest, he played a major role in securing Covid-19 vaccine contracts for Emergent Biosolutions, despite his conflicts of interest, some of which he had declined to disclose upon being appointed to serve as ASPR.

Emergent BiosolutionsтАЩ pattern of corrupt behavior, beginning with its anthrax vaccine, can be seen with its recent actions as it relates to its production of Covid-19 vaccines. Per the recent Congressional report, released just days before the recent spike in concern over monkeypox began, Emergent lab workers тАЬintentionally sought to mislead government inspectors about issuesтАЭ at its Baltimore-based plant and also repeatedly тАЬrebuffedтАЭ efforts by AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson to inspect their facilities. тАЬDespite major red flags at its vaccine manufacturing facility, EmergentтАЩs executives swept these problems under the rug and continued to rake in taxpayer dollars,тАЭ House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) stated upon the reportтАЩs release. Yet such тАЬmajor red flagsтАЭ can be found throughout the companyтАЩs entire history, for those willing to take the time to look.

Just days after the Congressional report was released, Emergent Biosolutions announced that it would acquire the exclusive worldwide rights to the тАЬfirst FDA-approved Smallpox Oral Antiviral for all agesтАЭ from the company Chimerix. The drug, called TEMBEXA, is only for the treatment of smallpox, which the company refers to as тАЬa high priority public health threat.тАЭ The press release on the companyтАЩs acquisition of TEMBEXA states that multi-million US government contracts for the product are anticipated. The FDA formally approved the drug last June.

Emergent Biosolutions also has the rights to the smallpox vaccine known as ACAM2000, which can also be used to treat monkeypox. The vaccine, originally produced by Sanofi, was acquired by the company in 2017. As a result, the company has an essential monopoly over smallpox vaccines as ACAM2000 is тАЬthe only vaccine licensed by the FDA for active immunization against smallpox disease for people determined to be at high risk of smallpox infection.тАЭ

Given their track record, itтАЩs worth asking why Emergent Biosolutions has been working in recent months to pivot much of its business into smallpox treatments. However, there is no speculation needed when observing that the current monkeypox fears and helping rescue the company, whose shares had fallen some 26% year to date before concern over the recent monkeypox outbreak began to grow.

Whatever comes of the monkeypox situation, Emergent BiosolutionsтАЩ decades-long track record is undeniably one of corruption and cronyism.

тАЬBioArmorтАЭ for Ron PerelmanтАЩs Flailing Business Empire

SIGA Technologies, which likens its products to тАЬHuman BioArmorтАЭ, features a quote from Bill Gates at the top of its about page. The quote reads: тАЬ[тАж] the next epidemic could originate on the computer screen of a terrorist intent on using genetic engineering to create a synthetic version of the smallpox virus [тАж]тАЭ The quote is from Bill GatesтАЩ speech to the 2017 Munich Security Conference, where he used to the threat specifically of smallpox to argue that тАЬhealth securityтАЭ and тАЬinternational securityтАЭ be merged. Notably, last March, the Munich Security Conference hosted a simulation of a global pandemic caused by a тАЬgenetically engineered monkeypox virus.тАЭ

SIGA is one example of a company that seeks to find its niche in the middle of тАЬhealth securityтАЭ and тАЬinternational security.тАЭ It specifically provides тАЬsolutions for unmet needs in the health security market that comprises medical countermeasures against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats, as well as emerging infectious diseases.тАЭ The majority of contracts for CBRN medical countermeasures in the US are funded by the Pentagon. While it promotes itself as a CBRN threat-focused company, SIGA is, for now, singularly focused on smallpox.

Indeed, SIGA Technologies is only currently profitable in the event of an actual outbreak of smallpox or a related disease, or when fear of a smallpox bioterror event is high. Specifically, concern over the latter has led to the company to win government contracts to produce TPOXX for the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS). This is because TPOXX is only used to treat active smallpox or monkeypox infection, not prevent it. This means that it is only useful if smallpox, monkeypox or a related disease is actively infecting people or if there is a high risk that one of these diseases will soon infect large groups of people. TPOXX was first approved in 2018 by the FDA and was approved by the European Medicine Agency (EMA) this past January. The FDA┬аapproved┬аan intravenous version of TPOXX just this past Thursday. Overall, SIGA has received over $1 billion from the US government to develop TPOXX.

SIGA is currently partnered with HHSтАЩ BARDA, the Department of Defense, the CDC and the NIH. Another partner is Lonza, a European pharmaceutical manufacturing firm that is partnered with both the World Economic Forum and Moderna. SIGAтАЩs CEO, Phillip Gomez, is an alumni of PRTM Consulting, where he would have worked closely with Robert Kadlec, as the two men overlapped as directors of the firm and both worked advising government agencies on matters of public health and biodefense.

SIGA is also notable because it is possibly the only company in the business empire of corporate raider Ron Perelman that is not attached to growing mountains of debt. Perelman is one of the notorious corporate raiders from the 1980s who conducted corporate takeovers fueled by junk bonds, particularly those connected to Michael MilkenтАЩs Drexel Burnham Lambert. PerelmanтАЩs business tactics have long been informed by his volcanic temper and his ruthlessness, with former Salomon Brothers CEO John Gutfruend once remarking that тАЬbelieving Mr. Perelman has no hostile intentions is like believing the tooth fairy exists.тАЭ

Perelman is also known for being a long-time patron of the Clinton family, even though, more recently he donated to Donald TrumpтАЩs political campaigns. Perelman apparently first became interested in courting influence with the Clintons after marrying Patricia Duff in 1994. Duff was deeply connected to the Democratic Party, having worked for Democratic pollster Pat Cadell, and she had also worked for the House panel that тАЬinvestigatedтАЭ the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. Prior to marrying Perelman, she had been married to movie mogul Michael Medavoy and had тАЬintroduced Clinton to the Hollywood establishment,тАЭ according to the Washington Post.

As PerelmanтАЩs wife, Duff styled herself a leading Democratic fundraiser, with the 1995 fund-raising dinner being emblematic of that. Also, in 1995, Perelman attended a $1,000-a-plate dinner in New York for the Clintons, where Perelman sat across from the President, as well as a state dinner for BrazilтАЩs president at the White House.

For Perelman, his generosity to the Clinton political machine resulted in an appointment by Clinton to the board of trustees of the Kennedy Center in 1995. Other, less public gestures from the Clintons were likely, as Perelman offered much more to the First Family than he appears to have received in return. Perhaps most notable of PerelmanтАЩs favors for Bill Clinton was his offering of jobs to scandal-ridden members of his administration, Webster Hubbell and Monica Lewinsky, in the wake of their respective controversies. However, after the job offers were publicly reported, both Hubbell and Lewinsky were let go, though the offers later caught the attention of independent counsel Ken Starr. Starr never subpoenaed or investigated Perelman or the offers he had made to Hubbell or Lewinsky.

The controversial hirings had been arranged between Perelman and Clinton advisor Vernon Jordan, who sat on the board of Revlon, a Perelman-controlled company, while his wife was on the board of another Perelman-owned firm. Jordan┬аwas known as┬аClintonтАЩs тАЬconduit to the high and mightyтАЭ and had taken Clinton to the 1991 Bilderberg conference. On the decision to hire Lewinsky following the scandal, a former business associate of PerelmanтАЩs told the Washington Post that тАЬItтАЩs like the Mafia, itтАЩs all done in code,тАЭ adding that тАЬI can assure you that Ronald made the decision to give Lewinsky the job. And I can assure you he wouldnтАЩt want to know why Jordan was asking.тАЭ

In 1995, Perelman held a Clinton fundraiser at his mansion, with guests including singer Jimmy Buffett, Miami Vice actor Don Johnson, actor Michael DouglasтАЩ then-wife Deandra and DNC co-chair Don Fowler. Other guests included A. Paul Prosperi, a corrupt Clinton crony, and the now infamous Jeffrey Epstein. Clinton himself attended the fundraiser. According to the Palm Beach Post, guests had donated at least $100,000 to the DNC to attend the dinner with the President. This was, of course, in the lead up to the 1996 election, and the DNC would later come under heavy scrutiny due to illegal fundraising. This fundraiser was not EpsteinтАЩs only interaction with Perelman тАУ Perelman would later be listed as a frequent dinner guest of EpsteinтАЩs in the 2003 Vanity Fair profile penned by Vicky Ward and is listed in EpsteinтАЩs black book of contacts.

For most of the 2000s, Perelman has sat atop a massive, ever-growing fortune. Yet, since 2020, Perelman has тАЬbeen unloading assets тАШA lot of them. Rapidly.тАЩтАЭ It stated with sales of valuable paintings at SothebyтАЩs and soon extended to PerelmanтАЩs investment company MacAndrews & Forbes, which disposed of its interest in two companies that same year, including $1 billion in shares in Scientific Games. According to MoneyWeek, PerelmanтАЩs net worth dropped from $19 billion in 2018 to $4.2 billion in late 2020, тАЬprompting speculation that heтАЩs runnings out of money.тАЭ Over the course of last year, Perelman has continued to тАЬdownsizeтАЭ, looking to sell off his estate in the Hamptons for $115 million, another 57-acre estate worth $180 million and two townhouses in ManhattanтАЩs Upper East Side for $60 million.

Other assets held by PerelmanтАЩs company MacAndrews & Forbes are also drowning in debt. One of the few assets of the company that isnтАЩt currently haemorrhaging money or struggling with debt is its shares in SIGA Technologies. PerelmanтАЩs main company, MacAndrews & Forbes, has long been one of SIGAтАЩs biggest investors and remains its largest shareholder, controlling 33% of all shares.

Since Perelman got involved with SIGA, accusations of corruption have plagued the company. For instance, in May 2011, SIGA was given a no-bid contract worth about $433 million to develop and produce 1.7 million doses of anti-viral drug for smallpox. At the time there was no evidence the smallpox drug in question was capable of treating the disease and there was alarm among some HHS staffers that SIGAтАЩs return on investment from the contract was тАЬoutrageous.тАЭ The contract began to be investigated over concerns that the contract had been awarded to SIGA precisely because it was controlled by Perelman, who had donated heavily to Barack Obama. At the time, CNN noted the following about PerelmanтАЩs connections to the Obama White House:

тАЬRonald Perelman is controlling shareholder of Siga Technologies and a longtime Democratic Party activist and fundraiser. HeтАЩs also a large contributor to Republicans, but has been a particular friend of the Obama White House.

Also on SigaтАЩs board of directors is Andy Stern, former president of the Service Employees International Union, who has had close relations with the Obama administration and who has supported President Barack ObamaтАЩs health care initiatives.тАЭ

As a result of these concerns and the potential conflict of interest, a congressional investigation began. Days after learning that this key government contract may be in jeopardy, SIGA executives sold off large amounts of company stock at an average price of $13.46 per share, netting its Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer at the time millions of dollars. A month later, the company announced that its contract had been downsized and shares in the company fell to under $2 by that December.

Given past тАЬpay-to-playтАЭ accusations around PerelmanтАЩs role in the firm during the Obama administration, when President Joe Biden served as Vice President, what are we to make of the recent media hype around monkeypox? Or concerns raised last year of a bioterrorism event involving smallpox?

Perhaps itтАЩs more important to ask other questions тАУ why has PerelmanтАЩs role in SIGA been largely obfuscated or totally ignored by recent reporting on the company? Similarly, why has Emergent BiosolutionsтАЩ horrific track record also been excluded from recent reports, including the major complaints from Congress made against the company less than two weeks ago? It seems the fear being generated around monkeypox is not only boosting shares for these two rotten companies, itтАЩs helping the public forget their past sins.

ITтАЩS ALL A DISTRACTIONтАж BUT A DISTRACTION FROM WHAT, EXACTLY?

By Dylan Charles

In a recent conversation with a close friend we were talking about the insane firehose of fear-inducing narratives coming from the talking heads on TV, and she commented that, тАШit was all just a big distraction.тАЩ

I hear that a lot. ItтАЩs all just a big distraction.

Perhaps itтАЩs true.

But a distraction from what, exactly?

IтАЩm going to zoom all the way out for a few hundred words here. All the way out beyond the distraction from the economic and globalist reality bearing down on all of us. All the way out beyond the cultural revolution underpinning the agendas being pimped on us by mainstream media. All the way out beyond the technocratic, bio-fascist takeover coming from the worldтАЩs largest and most-overfunded organizations, like the WEF. All the way out, even, beyond the dehumanization and depopulation agenda becoming evermore clear to the layman in todayтАЩs post-Covid authoritarian world.

IтАЩm going full spiritual here, because thereтАЩs something big that warrants your attention. Something which all the news, narratives and punditry never even skirt around, much less touch upon.

And that is the fact that you are so much more that what the material scientists and policy makers would have you believe. YouтАЩre being distracted from your connection to your higher self, to spirit itself.

ItтАЩs been a fascinating journey writing and publishing at Waking Times for over ten years. WeтАЩve discussed in great detail the works of pioneering thinkers like Rupert Sheldrake and Graham Hancock, and even brought renewed attention to the works of people like Rudolf Steiner, Carl Jung and other intellectuals whoтАЩve helped to walk us over the gap between science and spirit. The message that always stuck with me is that the true value of being human, as opposed to a mind-controlled robot, is their uniqueness, individuality and our unique human capacity experience wonder, mystery, and inspiration.

And we need inspiration right now. ItтАЩs the antidote to fear. And we need to wonder about the big picture. Your connection to your higher self and all the courage and humanity to be found within that. We need to wonder what we truly are, without all the dense commentary and negative social thought loops keeping us bound to the stupidity inherent in pop culture and group think.

What are you, truly?

тАЬThe cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.тАЭ ~Carl Sagan

Yeah, something like that.

The thing is, when you lose track of, or allow yourself to be distracted from, this reality, the walls of the world close in on you. You forget about the present moment and look at the future as a foe whose power comes from the failures of your past. You forget that youтАЩre endowed with the power to create, as Paul Levy reminded us in a podcast I did with him. You forget that your natural state is independence and courage, and you forget that you always have instant access to access these qualities, should you desire to call them in.

When youтАЩre distracted from the reality of your own sovereign standing as a unique and potentially powerful spiritual being, youтАЩre unable to set your own sails according to your own life passions. You are rudderless in a sea of mediocrity and conformity, and thereby perpetually seek the false sense of security and safety that comes from thinking youтАЩre part of a tribe. You self-sabotage and engage in all kinds of senseless self-destruction in order to numb the pain of denying your

Your connection to spirit is what gives your life meaning in a world where phoniness is front page news all day, everyday.

The reason why this connection matters is because youтАЩre being put to the test. The test is whether or not you can keep yourself together through all of the bullshit weтАЩre doggie-paddling around in, so that you can still manage to be effective in your own life rather than becoming food for the hostile beings that feed off fear and anxiety.

So, above all the information, data and reasoning required to find material truth in this world, you need to be connected to who you really are, and you need to know whatтАЩs right for you. Not what they say is right for you. These are distinctly different things. You need a connection to your spirit. Your higher self. You need access to the best part of your being.

The part of you that doesnтАЩt need public consensus in order to make a decision regarding your personal health. That part of you that doesnтАЩt check to see what everyone else is doing before declaring whatever it is you truly want out of this magical life. That part of you that wants to you be healthy, balanced and vital in a world of poison and pollution.

When you donтАЩt know who or what you are, you look outward towards others to complete this complex puzzle. When you donтАЩt know who you are, you deny your own inner wisdom. You concern yourself with things you have no power over. You live your life seeking approval, people pleasing and over-obligating yourself. When you donтАЩt know who you are, you leave the door wide open for fear, self-doubt, worry, and overwhelm.

If itтАЩs all a distraction, then itтАЩs time you refocus and recover your energy and power from the rigid, thought-controlling social discredit system being built up around you. The only thing that can save any of us is if all us remember who we are.

тАЬA man with outward courage dares to die; a man with inner courage dares to live.тАЭ ~Lao Tzu

America, Meet Your New Dictator-in-Chief: The PresidentтАЩs Secret, Unchecked Powers

By John W. Whitehead & Nisha Whitehead

Source: The Rutherford Institute

тАЬLife, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness have given way to permanent crisis management: to policing the planet and fighting preventative wars of ideological containment, usually on terrain chosen by, and favorable to, our enemies. Limited government and constitutional accountability have been shouldered aside by the kind of imperial presidency our constitutional system was explicitly designed to prevent.тАЭтАФ David C. Unger, The Emergency State: AmericaтАЩs Pursuit of Absolute Security at All Costs

America, meet your new dictator-in-chief.

As the New York Times reports, тАЬNewly disclosed documents have shed a crack of light on secret executive branch plans for apocalyptic scenariosтАФlike the aftermath of a nuclear attackтАФwhen the president may activate wartime powers for national security emergencies.тАЭ

The problem, of course, is that we have become a nation in a permanent state of emergency.

Power-hungry and lawless, the government has weaponized one national crisis after another in order to expand its powers and justify all manner of government tyranny in the so-called name of national security.

The seeds of this present madness were sown almost two decades ago when George W. Bush stealthily issued two presidential directives that granted the president the power to unilaterally declare a national emergency, which is loosely defined as тАЬany incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions.тАЭ

Comprising the countryтАЩs Continuity of Government (COG) plan, these directives (National Security Presidential Directive 51 and Homeland Security Presidential Directive 20) provide a skeletal outline of the actions the president will take in the event of a тАЬnational emergency.тАЭ

Just what sort of actions the president will take once he declares a national emergency can barely be discerned from the barebones directives. However, one thing is clear: in the event of a national emergency, the COG directives give unchecked executive, legislative and judicial power to the president.

The country would then be subjected to martial law by default, and the Constitution and the Bill of Rights would be suspended.

Essentially, the president would become a dictator for life.

It has happened already.

As we have witnessed in recent years, that national emergency can take any form, can be manipulated for any purpose and can be used to justify any end goalтАФall on the say so of the president.

The emergency powers that we know about which presidents might claim during such states of emergency are vast, ranging from imposing martial law and suspending habeas corpus to shutting down all forms of communications, including implementing an internet kill switch, and restricting travel.

Yet according to documents recently obtained by the Brennan Center, there may be many more secret powers that presidents may institute in times of so-called crisis without oversight from Congress, the courts, or the public.

It doesnтАЩt even matter what the nature of the crisis might beтАФcivil unrest, the national emergencies, тАЬunforeseen economic collapse, loss of functioning political and legal order, purposeful domestic resistance or insurgency, pervasive public health emergencies, and catastrophic natural and human disastersтАЭтАФas long as it allows the government to justify all manner of government tyranny in the name of so-called national security.

The war on COVID-19, the war on terror, the war on drugs, the war on illegal immigration: all of these programs started out as responses to pressing national concerns and have since become weapons of compliance and control in the police stateтАЩs hands.

Deploying the same strategy it used with 9/11 to acquire greater powers under the USA Patriot Act, the police stateтАФa.k.a. the shadow government, a.k.a. the Deep StateтАФhas been planning and preparing for such crises for years now, quietly assembling a wish list of presidential lockdown powers that could be trotted out and approved at a momentтАЩs notice.

Indeed, the Trump Administration even asked Congress to allow it to suspend parts of the Constitution whenever it deems it necessary during the COVID-19 crisis and тАЬotherтАЭ emergencies. The Department of Justice (DOJ) went so far as to quietly trot out and test a long laundry list of terrifying powers that override the Constitution.

WeтАЩre talking about lockdown powers (at both the federal and state level): the ability to suspend the Constitution, indefinitely detain American citizens, bypass the courts, quarantine whole communities or segments of the population, override the First Amendment by outlawing religious gatherings and assemblies of more than a few people, shut down entire industries and manipulate the economy, muzzle dissidents, тАЬstop and seize any plane, train or automobile to stymie the spread of contagious disease,тАЭ reshape financial markets, create a digital currency (and thus further restrict the use of cash), determine who should live or die.

These are powers the police state would desperately like to make permanent.

In such a climate, the American president becomes dictator with permanent powers: imperial, unaccountable and unconstitutional.

Bear in mind that the powers the government officially asked Congress to recognize and authorize barely scratch the surface of the far-reaching powers the government has already unilaterally claimed for itself.

Unofficially, the police state with the president at its helm has been riding roughshod over the rule of law for years now without any pretense of being reined in or restricted in its power grabs by Congress, the courts or the citizenry.

Although the Constitution invests the President with very specific, limited powers, in recent years, American presidents have claimed the power to completely and almost unilaterally alter the landscape of this country for good or for ill.

The powers amassed by each successive president through the negligence of Congress and the courtsтАФpowers which add up to a toolbox of terror for an imperial rulerтАФempower whoever occupies the Oval Office to act as a dictator, above the law and beyond any real accountability.

As law professor William P. Marshall explains, тАЬevery extraordinary use of power by one President expands the availability of executive branch power for use by future Presidents.тАЭ

Moreover, it doesnтАЩt even matter whether other presidents have chosen not to take advantage of any particular power, because тАЬit is a PresidentтАЩs action in using power, rather than forsaking its use, that has the precedential significance.тАЭ

In other words, each successive president continues to add to his officeтАЩs list of extraordinary orders and directives, expanding the reach and power of the presidency and granting him- or herself near dictatorial powers.

All of the imperial powers amassed by Barack Obama and George W. BushтАФto kill American citizens without due process, to detain suspects indefinitely, to strip Americans of their citizenship rights, to carry out mass surveillance on Americans without probable cause, to suspend laws during wartime, to disregard laws with which he might disagree, to conduct secret wars and convene secret courts, to sanction torture, to sidestep the legislatures and courts with executive orders and signing statements, to direct the military to operate beyond the reach of the law, to operate a shadow government, and to act as a dictator and a tyrant, above the law and beyond any real accountabilityтАФwere inherited by Donald Trump and passed along to Joe Biden.

These presidential powersтАФacquired through the use of executive orders, decrees, memorandums, proclamations, national security directives and legislative signing statements and which can be activated by any sitting presidentтАФenable past, president and future presidents to operate above the law and beyond the reach of the Constitution.

These are the powers that continue to be passed along to each successive heir to the Oval Office, the Constitution be damned.

This is what you might call a stealthy, creeping, silent, slow-motion coup dтАЩ├йtat.

From Clinton to Bush, Obama to Trump, and now Biden, itтАЩs as if weтАЩve been caught in a time loop, forced to re-live the same abuses over and over again: the same assaults on our freedoms, the same disregard for the rule of law, the same subservience to the Deep State, and the same corrupt, self-serving government that exists only to amass power, enrich its shareholders and ensure its continued domination.

WeтАЩve been losing our freedoms so incrementally for so longтАФsold to us in the name of national security and global peace, maintained by way of martial law disguised as law and order, and enforced by a standing army of militarized police and a political elite determined to maintain their powers at all costsтАФthat itтАЩs hard to pinpoint exactly when it all started going downhill, but тАЬwe the peopleтАЭ are paying the price for it now.

We are paying the price every day that we allow the government to continue to wage its war on the American People, a war that is being fought on many fronts: with bullets and tasers, with surveillance cameras and license readers, with intimidation and propaganda, with court rulings and legislation, with the collusion of every bureaucrat who dances to the tune of corporate handouts while on the governmentтАЩs payroll, and most effectively of all, with the complicity of the American people, who continue to allow themselves to be easily manipulated by their politics, distracted by their pastimes, and acclimated to a world in which government corruption is the norm.

Unless something changes in the way we deal with these ongoing, egregious abuses of power, the predators of the police state will continue to wreak havoc on our freedoms, our communities, and our lives.

If we continue down this road, there can be no surprise about what awaits us at the end.

After all, it is a tale that has been told time and again throughout history about how easy it is for freedom to fall and tyranny to rise, and it often begins with one small, seemingly inconsequential willingness on the part of the people to compromise their principles and undermine the rule of law in exchange for a dubious assurance of safety, prosperity and a life without care.

Unfortunately, the process of unseating a dictator and limiting the powers of the presidency is far from simple but at a minimum, it must start with тАЬwe the people.тАЭ

For starters, as I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, we must recalibrate the balance of power.

Start locallyтАФin your own communities, in your schools, at your city council meetings, in newspaper editorials, at protestsтАФby pushing back against laws that are unjust, police departments that overreach, politicians that donтАЩt listen to their constituents, and a system of government that grows more tyrannical by the day.

What we desperately need is a concerted, collective commitment to the ConstitutionтАЩs principles of limited government, a system of checks and balances, and a recognition that theyтАФthe president, Congress, the courts, the military, the police, the technocrats and plutocrats and bureaucratsтАФanswer to and are accountable to тАЬwe the people.тАЭ

This will mean that Americans will have to stop letting their personal politics and party allegiances blind them to government misconduct and power grabs.

It will mean holding all three branches of government accountable to the Constitution (i.e., vote them out of office if they abuse their powers).

And it will mean calling on Congress to put an end to the use of presidential executive orders, decrees, memorandums, proclamations, national security directives and legislative signing statements as a means of getting around Congress and the courts.

In other words, weтАЩve got to start making both the president and the police state play by the rules of the Constitution.

The REAL agenda behind the created food crisis

The created food crisis, whether real or a smoke-and-mirrors psy-op, is all about tearing down the global food system and тАЬbuilding back betterтАЭ тАУ a new dystopian food system built by corporate monoliths and rigidly controlled in the name of the greater good.

By Kit Knightly

Source: Off-Guardian

WeтАЩre in the early stages of a food crisis.

The press has been predicting this for years, but  up until now it always appeared to be nothing more than fearmongering, designed to worry or distract people, but the signs are there that this time, to quote Joe Biden, it тАЬis going to be realтАЭ.

Nobody knows how bad it could get, except the people who are creating it.

Because the evidence is pretty clear, it is being deliberately & cold-bloodedly created. WeтАЩve been documenting it for months.

We have RussiaтАЩs тАЬspecial operationтАЭ in Ukraine driving up the price of staple foods, wheat and sunflower oil, as well as fertiliser.

We have the sudden тАЬbird flu outbreakтАЭ driving up the price of poultry and eggs.

The soaring price of oil is driving up the cost of food distribution.

The inflation caused by huge influxes of fiat currency means families are spending more money on less food.

And as all this is happening, the US and UK (and maybe others, we donтАЩt know) are literally paying farmers not to farm.

ItтАЩs pretty clear this is The Great Reset: Food Edition. The lockdown melody with slightly different lyrics. A process of breaking down the structures already in place so we can тАЬbuild back betterтАЭ with a more controlled and more corporatised food system

Just as the Covid тАЬpandemicтАЭ was said to highlight тАЬweaknesses in the multilateral systemтАЭ, so this food crisis will show that our тАЬunstable food systems are in need of reformтАЭ and we need to ensure our тАЬfood securityтАЭтАжor a thousand variations on that theme.

ThatтАЩs not supposition. They already started, over a year ago.

The Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems & Community Developments published a paper in February 2021 titled:

Dismantling and rebuilding the food system after COVID-19: Ten principles for redistribution and regeneration

In an interview from July last year, Ruth Richardson the Executive Director of the NGO Global Alliance for the Future of Food literally said:

Our Dominant Food System Needs to Be Dismantled and RebuiltтАЭ

Later, in September 2021, the UN convened the first-ever тАЬFood Systems SummitтАЭ, whose mission statement included the line:

Rebuilding the food systems of the world will also enable us to answer the UN Secretary-GeneralтАЩs call to тАЬbuild back betterтАЭ from COVID-19.

Writing in the Guardian two weeks ago, George Monbiot, weathervane for every deep state agenda, states with his trademark lack of subtlety:

The banks collapsed in 2008 тАУ and our food system is about to do the sameтАжThe system has to change.

But what does тАЬchangeтАЭ and тАЬrebuiltтАЭ actually mean in this context?

Well, thatтАЩs no mystery, theyтАЩve been talking it up for years.

Almost all of these are stories from just the past month or so, many of them talking points at the World Economic ForumтАЩs Davos Conference.

As is almost always the case, the problem to which theyтАЩre currently тАЬreactingтАЭ already has a series of pre-ordained solutions.

Just as we saw lockdowns break the economy to pieces whilst the billionaire class land record profits whilst corporate megaliths expanded their monopolies, so too will any proposed food security policies end up benefiting the already mega-rich or installing infrastructure for corporate control.

They just announced the building of the largest тАЬcultured meat factoryтАЭ in the world. Fake meat, of course, canтАЩt be raised at home and is subject to patented processes of creation. Genetically edited or modified plants and animals are likewise subject to patents.

Supranational companies, with profits larger than the budget of some nations, are developing carbon footprint tracker apps which reward people for making the тАЬright decisionsтАЭ. That could easily be applied to food.

Bill Gates has quietly become the largest owner of agricultural land in the United States. Land on which he can grow new Frankencrops, or which the US government will pay him not to use.

The play is clear: Right now theyтАЩre getting ready to tear all our old food systems down, with the stated aim of building them back better.

But better for them, not us.

Monkeypox and the Covid-19 Vaccine

By Dr, Mike Williams

Source: UK Column

UK Column has covered various aspects of the Covid-19 virus and has looked in depth at the significant negative effects of the Covid-19 vaccine, including clotting, and also the change in immunological mechanisms after vaccination. Those mechanisms were used to explain the poor performance of the Covid-19 vaccine campaign, highlighted by an increased relative risk of infection for those vaccinated compared to the unvaccinated.

This article will address the current atypical spread of monkeypox virus around the world. To be clear, up until now, monkeypox hasnтАЩt caused large clusters of infection in separate countries at the same timeтАФthat is highly unusual.

Monkeypox is one of the four genera of pox viruses that can infect humans. There are two distinct clades of monkeypox virus; the current infections are the West African version and are typically mild, with a death rate of less than one per cent. Chicken pox is an unrelated herpes, specifically Varicella virus.

It needs to be explained why we are seeing such a highly unusual pattern of infections. The medical concern is that we are witnessing an increase in human-to-human transmission.

Basic data

Current data indicate that there are 107 confirmed casesтАФof which 19 have been hospitalisedтАФand 85 suspected cases, with four hospitalisations among them. Taking only the confirmed cases, we thus obtain an 18% hospitalisation rate; combining the cases of all statuses, we get a 12% hospitalisation rate. However, those percentages will change as the cases increase.

Early data suggest that there is an increased risk amongst men who have sex with men.

Background

In Stabilising the Code, we learned that:

In 2005, Drs. Weissman and Kariko discovered a way to protect foreign mRNA from the bodyтАЩs immune system. That scientific milestone would be key to the advancement of the mRNA vaccines in 2020.

Specifically, they altered the genetic code of RNA.

Their key discovery, that modifying the RNA code (modifying the nucleoside uridine) resulted in ablating the innate immune response, involved toll-like receptors (TLR).

This discovery was adopted in the mRNA technology used in Covid vaccines, in order that the foreign vaccine mRNA could enter cells without being destroyed.

The RNA alteration results in the bodyтАЩs immune defencesтАФspecifically, toll-like receptors (TLR)тАФnot recognising foreign invaders like viruses. As I continued to set out in Stabilising the Code:

The key TLRs affected are TLR 3, TLR 7 and TLR 8. They act as sentries, whose job is to recognise foreign invaders by way of their form or patterns [тАж]

That technologyтАФaltering RNAтАФwas adopted for the Covid-19 mRNA vaccines.

Dominguez-Andres et al. discovered that not only had that technology worked well, but it appeared to have induced long term immune tolerance in the vaccinated:

The response of innate immune cells to TLR4 and TLR7/8 ligands was lower after BNT162b2 vaccination[.]

Toll-like receptors were found not to work as well after vaccination as before. That was not supposed to happen. Obviously, you need your TLRs to be working in order to fend off viruses like monkeypox.

Mechanisms

Toll-like receptors

Stack and Bowie investigated monkeypox virus and the role of TLR 4:

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) have an anti-viral role in that they detect viruses, leading to cytokine and IFN induction, and as such are targeted by viruses for immune evasion. TLR4, although best known for its role in recognizing bacterial LPS, is also strongly implicated in the immune response to viruses [тАж] This work reveals the molecular basis for poxviral antagonism of TLR4.

Harte et al. demonstrated that pox virus suppresses the host defence by blocking TLR 3:

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are crucial in the innate immune response to pathogens, in that they recognize and respond to pathogen associated molecular patterns, which leads to activation of intracellular signaling pathways and altered gene expression [тАж]
This study reveals a novel mechanism used by VV [pox virus] to suppress the host immunity. We demonstrate viral disabling of TLRs, providing further evidence for an important role for this family of receptors in the antiviral response.

Interferon

We also know that TLRs, upon detecting a virus, will activate other parts of the immune system. Khanmohammedi and Rezaei write:

TollтАРlike receptors (TLR) play an important role in recognition of viral particles and activation of the innate immune system. Activation of TLR pathways leads to secretion of proтАРinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukinтАР1 (ILтАР1), ILтАР6, and tumor necrosis factorтАР╬▒, as well as type 1 interferon [тАж]
Robust induction of type I IFN through the activation of TLRs constitutes a critical aspect of antiviral immunity.

It being the case that TLRs activate other parts of the immune systemтАФand given that, due to alterations in the vaccine mRNA, TLRs are no longer as responsiveтАФwe should expect to see a difference in downstream immunological profiles as well after vaccination.

Ivanova et al. have observed:

Myeloid cells with high expression of Toll-like receptors (TLR) and other pattern-recognition receptors are likely the first to respond to viral infection. Robust induction of type I IFN through the activation of TLRs constitutes a critical aspect of antiviral immunity[тАж]
IFN production is dependent on transcription factors IRF7 and IRF8, which interact with MyD88 (Lester and Li, 2014; Tailor et al., 2007; Xagorari and Chlichlia, 2008). Prior studies of immune responses during COVID-19 found increased activity of these innate immune pathways (Scagnolari et al., 2021; Xu et al., 2020; Zhou et al., 2020) [тАж]
Differential gene expression analysis of pDCs from COVID-19 patients and immunized individuals revealed a dramatic upregulation of gene signature associated with type I and type II IFN production in the former and not the latter.

Clearly, the attenuation (weakening) of TLRs after Covid-19 vaccination is having a significant negative effect: in this case, the possible reduction of interferon in response to infectionтАФan important defence against viruses.

Pox viruses

Pox viruses, like so many other viruses, have developed to try to outwit the human immune defences.

That has been observed in the science literature, such as Arndt et al., Evasion of the Innate Immune Type I Interferon System by Monkeypox Virus; and Johnstone et al., who demonstrate just why the virus needs to do so, in: In vitro inhibition of monkeypox virus production and spread by Interferon-╬▓.

Indeed, pivotal to the success or failure of the monkeypox virus is its ability to overcome TLRs and switch off interferon.

Of course, once the immune system is primed to have a weaker response by TLRs and IFN, then it is more susceptible to pox infection. All that is then required to challenge it is exposure to the target virus.

The immune system is a symphony of complex responses, so an altered TLR response does not guarantee successful infection upon exposure to monkeypox virusтАФbut it does increase the chances of it, since a major, initial defence mechanism has been weakened; especially if other factors increase that susceptibility.

Who is being infected?

The list of those known to be infected with monkeypox in the recent outbreaks is almost exclusively male, with reports of male-to-male sex being a common factor. It is still very early in the investigation, so that picture may change. However, it is well understood that men who have sex with other men have a demonstrably increased risk of infection with such viruses.

The current published list of those infected with monkeypox has one woman on it. That, plus the relatively high percentage of gay and bisexual men on the list, suggests that monkeypox may be being spread through networks of sexual intercourse.

Kelleher writes in Pink News:

The UKHSA [UK Health Security Agency, formerly known as Public Health EnglandтАФeditorial note] has said cases are primarily being detected among gay and bisexual men, which has led to some level of concern in the LGBTQ+ community.

ItтАЩs thought that monkeypox is not sexually transmitted, but itтАЩs possible that the virus is spreading through close contact in sexual networks, according to Mateo Prochazka, an epidemiologist with the UKHSA.

On 17 May, Prochazka said on Twitter that 57 per cent of the cases they had detected at that stage were among gay or bisexual men. That figure is тАЬhighly suggestive of spread in sexual networksтАЭ, he said.

The question has to be asked, though: why now? Men havenтАЩt just started having sex with other men. And are all the cases connected?

The global incidences of monkeypoxтАФand the apparent, highly unusual, velocity of spreadтАФargues that something new has entered the equation; something has changed.

What is the new factor?

Lockdown my have played a part in immune reduction in adults, due to the deprival of human contact, as described in Medical News Today:

According to a paper by Stanford researcher Firdaus S. Dhabhar, Ph.D., in the journal Immunologic Research, тАЬchronic stress can suppress protective immune responses and/or exacerbate pathological immune responses.тАЭ

For adults, it is the stress of isolation and the pandemic, rather than the lack of interaction with microbes, that is a concern for the immune system.

Yet most countries are relatively back to normal now, with people socialising again; and, unless there are chronic effects, the very fact that close contact is hypothesised as a mechanism of monkeypox spread argues against a policy of social isolation of those infected.

I suggest that we would be foolish to ignore chronic immune alteration due to Covid-19 mRNA vaccination, and the specific attenuation of TLRs that has been leading to altered interferon production and increasing susceptibility to viruses such as monkeypox.

Thankfully, most cases are mild, but tragically, we will see fatalities, as we do with other diseases. We will, no doubt, also be seeing more fear-mongering by the media and governments.

Of course, they have already started; in fact, long before the first reported cases this month even happened.

The┬аStrengthening Global Systems to Prevent and Respond to High-Consequence Biological Threats┬аtabletop exercise conducted in partnership with the Munich Security Conference (the largest annual meeting of the intelligence agencies of the Western world) in November 2021 seems accurately to have predicted this current monkeypox scenarioтАФeven down to the month it started.

Image source:┬аStrengthening Global Systems to Prevent and Respond to High-Consequence Biological Threats, p. 10

How are these tabletop exercises so accurate in their predictions?

According to that scenario, monkeypox is released as a biological weapon, billions across the globe will be affected, and hundreds of millions will die:

The exercise scenario concludes with more than three billion cases and 270 million fatalities globally [тАж]

Strengthening Global Systems to Prevent and Respond to High-Consequence Biological Threats, p. 8

Absent any other evidence, and on the balance of probabilities, what we are witnessing now suggests vaccine-induced immunological attenuation and foul play.

Do you trust what you see? How can you? Our eyes are no longer the primary way that we see; they have been swapped out for the filters of screens and technology. Perhaps what we donтАЩt see, however, is at least as important as what we do see. But how can we become aware of what we donтАЩt see?

These questions lie at the heart of the fascinating new documentary All Light, Everywhere, an entrancing blend of neuroscience, metaphysics, and technological history that has the smarts to apply some sly, subtle social commentary to its elusive subjects.

At first, the film seems to flitter among semi-connected topics: A marketing campaign that is testing its volunteersтАЩ reactions to visual images; a tour of Axon Industries, the #1 maker of police body cameras, with its corporate spin doctor as our guide; an aerial composite-imaging system that was used secretly by Baltimore police to surveil the city. Interspersed into these тАЬstorylinesтАЭ are narrated forays into the history of early photography along with B-roll of ordinary people preparing to view the 2017 solar eclipse with their own cameras (and eyes). This unrelenting focus on the production and consumption of visual imagery transforms the film into an almost fractal experience. It becomes a bit too much: the sheer ubiquity of people looking, eyes looking, images to be seen and consumed and interpreted, examinations of the various technologies serving up new pictures to be mediated. The unsettling point of this unconventional documentary seems to be to distort rather than clarify the subject at hand тАФ and that may be just what director Theo Anthony wants.

The underlying political relevance of the film is transparent. We live in a surveillance society, consenting (though not always consciously) to being filmed, watched, and recorded by corporations hoping to sell us products based on the data they gather. The government snoops in the name of crime prevention and law enforcement. The value of the latter has been hotly debated in the last few years: George FloydтАЩs murder being a prime example. Here the police body cameras showed us what we believe to be an тАЬobjectiveтАЭ record of events, footage of police brutality and murder. But body camera images have been weaponized by both sides, each seeking to prove something that will help their case. What Axon Industries sells to police forces (and to the general public) is that they are confident their cameras will tell the тАЬtruthтАЭ about any police action. Accountability is promoted as their productтАЩs best feature. But it is more than that тАФ тАЬbehavior will change тАЭ┬аbecause┬аof the presence of cameras, that they will inhibit bad behavior.

But what do body cameras actually show us? Are these videos an authentic record of reality? The documentary examines, abstractly at first and then far more concretely, how there is always bias. Where is the camera located on the body? Does its wide-angle lens distort our understanding of action? How is this data interpreted and by whom? There are so many levels of interpretation that тАЬobjectivityтАЭ has turned into a myth.

The filmтАЩs looks back into the past are also illuminating, unsettling illustrations of how camera technology has almost always been co-opted for violent and authoritarian uses, whether it be the American military tracking the enemy on the battlefield or in the early experiments in composite imaging used by police to profile criminals. The latter presages the now rampant use of facial recognition technology, its marketed value undercut by its practical limitations as well as ethical muddiness.

The irony is not lost that what weтАЩre looking at is itself a film, another visual entity that requires us to watch and to mediate. The filmтАЩs meta-commentary confesses that its stochastic manipulation is by design. Highly kinetic editing leads our brains to make connections in ways that excited Eisenstein at the dawn of film a century ago: the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The mind demands order, so the juxtaposition and collision of images generates meanings that did not exist in individual images.

Anthony draws on history to help us make sense of a visual world that is increasingly fleeting and fragmented. The film is reminiscent, in style and subject matter, of the works of Errol Morris. This goes for its sometimes desultory exposition, as well as its approach to epistemology. (Morris explores these issues in all of his films, as well as in his essays in his books┬аBelieving Is Seeing┬аand┬аThe Ashtray.) In the third act of┬аAll Light, Everywhere, a well-placed quotation from Frederick Douglass summaries the central issue: тАЬWe all feel that there is something more. That the curtain has not yet been lifted. There is a prophet with us forever whispering that behind the seen lies the immeasurable unseen.тАЭ The тАЬimmeasurable unseenтАЭ may not be possible to capture on cameras, no matter how many we use or how hard we strive for an elusive objectivity. Perhaps it is more important for us to understand that urge for тАЬsomething moreтАЭ should lead to examining how, why, and for whom the image was made.

YouTube CEO at World Economic Forum: тАЬThereтАЩll always be work that we have to doтАЭ to censor тАЬmisinformationтАЭ

A commitment to constant censorship.

At the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting for 2022, an event where powerful CEOs and world leaders meet to тАЬfind solutions to the worldтАЩs most urgent challenges,тАЭ YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki committed to persistent censorship of тАЬmisinformationтАЭ and praised YouTubeтАЩs existing censorship efforts.

Wojcicki made the comments after Alyson Shontell Lombardi, the Editor-in-Chief of Fortune Magazine, asked her whether YouTubeтАЩs efforts to censor misinformation will always be a тАЬwork in progress.тАЭ

тАЬI think thereтАЩll always be work that we have to do because there will always be incentives for people to be creating misinformation,тАЭ Wojcicki said. тАЬThe challenge will be to keep staying ahead of that and make sure that we are understanding what they are and the different ways that people may use to try to trick our systems and make sure that our systems are staying ahead of whatтАЩs necessary to make sure that we are managing that.тАЭ

Wojcicki continued by praising YouTubeтАЩs 5-6 year initiative of cracking down on content thatтАЩs deemed to be misinformation and said that users who look at YouTube search results or the homepage will see content from тАЬauthoritative sourcesтАЭ (mainstream media outlets that YouTube designates as authoritative) for тАЬsensitive topics.тАЭ

Earlier in the conversation, Wojcicki said YouTube is тАЬinvesting a huge amount to make sure that weтАЩre fighting misinformationтАЭ and discussed the various ways YouTube is cracking down on misinformation. She pointed to YouTube introducing 10 COVID censorship policies, YouTubeтАЩs policy of not recommending тАЬborderline contentтАЭ which doesnтАЩt break YouTubeтАЩs rules but is deemed to be тАЬlower quality,тАЭ and YouTubeтАЩs policy of demonetizing content thatтАЩs deemed to be тАЬpropagating something that is generally understood as not accurate information.тАЭ

Wojcicki also talked about YouTubeтАЩs violative view rate (VVR) тАУ a metric that shows how many views come from content that violates YouTubeтАЩs rules. The metric indicates how swiftly YouTube is censoring content. A low VVR signals that most of the content YouTube removes is being taken down before viewers have a chance to watch it.

Wojcicki noted that just 10-12 views of every 10,000 come from violative content and that this number has тАЬcome down significantlyтАЭ over time.

тАЬOur plan is to continue to work on it and make sure that we continue to reduce that,тАЭ Wojcicki added.

WojcickiтАЩs commitment to always crackdown on misinformation echoes her and the platformтАЩs previous vows to censor misinformation. Days ago, Wojcicki promised to tackle тАЬmisinformationтАЭ to win over corporate cash. And earlier this year, she said: тАЬTackling misinformation and other harmful content is a top priority.тАЭ

YouTube has already┬аdeleted more than a million videos for тАЬCOVID misinformation,тАЭ┬аplans to preemptively censor тАЬnew misinformation,тАЭ┬аand┬аhas considered hiding the share button to prevent misinformation spread.
